What is Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)?

Synergy Research Centers - Restless Legs Syndrome InfographicRestless Leg Syndrome is a nervous system disorder that is characterized by an urge to move the legs. Most often, symptoms are worse in the evening – when the affected person is sitting or lying down. This can make it hard to fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night. For this reason, RLS is also considered a sleep disorder.

Restless Leg Syndrome affects roughly 10 percent of the U.S. population and is most commonly found in women. Symptoms can appear at any age, even as early as pre-adolescence, though most of those affected are middle-aged or older. Unfortunately, RLS can be tricky to diagnose because symptoms are less obvious during the day when a patient would be visiting the doctor’s office.

What are the Causes of RLS?

The cause of RLS can vary from person to person, and in some cases, the reason won’t be entirely clear. Certain medications like antidepressants and antihistamines can trigger RLS. Other chronic issues such as diabetes or diseases like Parkinson’s disease may also be to blame.

What causes RLS?

Do I Have Restless Leg Syndrome?

This is a common question and there are four criteria that must be met in order for you to be accurately diagnosed with RLS.

The 4 Diagnostic Criteria for RLS

  1. You have a strong, irresistible urge to move your legs. Some people use the words creeping, itching, pulling, creepy-crawly and tugging to describe the sensation.
  2. Your symptoms start or get worse when resting. Whether you’re sitting or lying down, the prickly feeling in your legs gets worse the longer you’re at rest.
  3. Your symptoms are worse in the evening and at night. If your symptoms don’t get worse at night, it’s possible you don’t have RLS.
  4. Your symptoms get better when you move your legs. Relief can be complete or partial, but generally starts very shortly after you begin activity.

Medical Treatment for RLS

There are no known cures for RLS, but there are treatments available that may be beneficial, though medications are generally administered on a case-by-case basis. At home, people may be able to alleviate RLS or greatly reduce the severity of symptoms with proper management.

Among the top suggestions for people with restless leg syndrome are avoiding caffeine, nicotine and alcohol, especially close to bedtime. Keeping other physical impairments such as diabetes, kidney disease, anemia and thyroid issues under control may also help some people suffer less.

Restless Leg Syndrome Research Studies and Clinical Trials in San Diego

At Synergy Research Centers in San Diego, we’re currently enrolling participants 18 and over for a clinical research study on Restless Leg Syndrome. In doing so, we hope to discover whether a new medicine will provide better treatment results than what is currently available to the public. Qualified participants will receive a stipend at each scheduled visit.
